WILL RETURN IN 2023

October 22 -23, 2022

TeMaTe Institute hosted our second biennial Convening for Black Dance and Culture. This program featured 6 dance instructors from California, NYC, St. Louis, Chicago, and Detroit in a two-day cultural celebration. Participants engaged in dance, drum, song, and history lessons and explored the many ways to uplift black cultural experiences. The Convening for Black Dance and Culture is part of our ongoing programing where we focus on themes that explore our actions as humans moving together in music and dance for change and justice. The result of this approach is to challenge the audience to play an active role in community cultural historians and disseminating knowledge.

Our second biennial convening was born from a year-long collaboration with Chicago-based movement artist, musician, and dance organizer, T. Ayo Alston. We also wanted to highlight the next generation of stewards in West African history through dance. Our group of teachers are pushing the boundaries of choreography and innovation African diaspora dance.
