The Convening for Dance and Culture is an annual two-day dance conference and concert experience in Detroit, Michigan. This event interweaves interactive classes taught by expert instructors from the African Diaspora. Classes are available on Saturday and Sunday, as well as an evening fundraiser performance from the TeMaTe dance company.

SUPPORT DETROIT ARTS & CULTURE

By purchasing a ticket to our annual convening conference and/or concert, you directly support TeMaTe Institute, a 501(c)3 nonprofit committed to sharing the movements and history of West African rhythms and the wider African diaspora.

Your support helps TeMaTe:

  • Create new interactive workshops that teach multigenerational drumming and dance classes for residents in Metro Detroit.

  • Reduces financial barriers to arts and culture programs, helping us to provide free or low cost classes/events to low and moderate income households..

  • Artistic development and mentorships for performance company members which provides experience, training, and tools to build strong technique and performance ability..

FAQs

  • The concert showcases TeMaTe’s dance company. There will be up six performances over a two hour period with a short intermission.

  • Sessions include traditional West African dances such as Sabar, Drum and dance, Congolese and more!

  • In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and our own commitment to making programs accessible, all facilities utilized by TeMaTe Institute for Black Dance and Culture are ADA compliant.   • Yes. Volunteers receive free or discounted admission. Applications open up to two months prior to the event.
