The 2026 Convening for Dance and Culture, Evolving Legacy: A Journey of Reconnection, explores how dance, memory, and community keep cultural traditions alive. Through workshops, conversation, and performance, participants are invited to reconnect with the people, places, stories, and traditions that have shaped African Diaspora dance while imagining how those legacies continue to evolve.
The theme was inspired by the story of Sierra Afrique, a Detroit club and community gathering place that is closing its doors after more than 20 years. The closing prompted reflection on what happens when a physical gathering place disappears and what remains in the people: memories, relationships, music, and dance that were created there.
